With the recent announcement that PSVR 2 not only exists but is almost ready for release, it's time to take a look at how it stacks up against the current VR headset leader, the Quest 2.

Both headsets are a significant upgrade over their predecessors and bring huge leaps in immersion. Let's look at the main features of each headphone.
PSVR2
PSVR 2 features a vastly improved screen set compared to its processor, as well as the ability to track eye movements. Tracking is now in the headset with a variety of cameras, eliminating the need for the PlayStation's external camera. Big changes are coming to make PSVR 2 the most immersive VR experience yet, with haptic feedback that allows players to create a haptic connection to the game.
For example, players might feel a character's heartbeat increase during tense moments, the movement of objects passing close to the character's head, or the momentum of a vehicle as the character moves forward. In addition, PS5's Tempest 3D AudioTech brings the sounds to life around the player, adding to this new level of immersion."

Oculus (now Meta) designed the Quest 2 to be a headset for the masses. It's cheap, wireless, and capable of running most of the best VR experiences/games made to date. With a high-resolution display, a powerful mobile processor and 6 GB of RAM, it runs smoothly and has access to the largest VR app store on the market.
You can also connect Quest 2 to a VR-enabled PC to play the most advanced VR games like Star Wars Squadrons or Half Life Alyx. You also get some premium features like hand tracking and a 120Hz display for a device that's half the price of a flagship phone.
Body
Probably the first thing people think of when buying a VR headset is the screen(s). Some headsets come with a single screen, others have a screen for each eye. PSVR 2 is equipped with two OLED panels with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 per eye, it is a4K HDR experience🇧🇷 If that doesn't mean anything to you, just know that it's pretty impressive. At this resolution, the immersive world should look clear and sharp, which is what we want.
PSVR will also be the first mainstream headset to feature foveated rendering. This is a process whereby the headset tracks your eye movements and only renders what's directly in front of you at the highest quality, slightly blurring the periphery. Not only does this mimic how the human eye works, but it also saves the headset's processing power that can be used elsewhere.
The PSVR 2's maximum refresh rate is 120Hz, which is on the higher end of current VR headsets, but nothing revolutionary. This should make moving objects appear smooth in games and videos and prevent blurring.
The Quest 2 has a single LCD screen with a resolution of 1832×1920 per eye. LCD screens generally allow for a sharper image at the expense of true black areas that appear a sort of gray thanks to the continuous backlight.
There is a lot of debate between LCD and OLED in VR headsets, but most seem to agree that OLED is better overall as it offers a more realistic experience. The image below shows what this looks like on two phone screens. Left is LCD and right is OLED.
With a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz and a field of view of 100 degrees, the Quest can match the PSVR 2 in these areas, but otherwise the higher resolutionOLED screen comes out on topif you look at the specs.
tracking and controllers
Both PSVR 2 and Oculus Quest 2 have on-headset tracking. That means both use cameras and sensors built into the headset to track your body, arm, hand and head movements. You also don't need to install additional cameras in a room.
Accurate tracking is extremely important for an immersive and fun VR experience; Thankfully, all of the VR headset innovators have come a long way in the past few years, and it's pretty normal for a headset to have excellent tracking capabilities.
PSVR 2 will come with some innovations not seen in a traditional headset, including haptic feedback. A major advancement in interacting with a VR world would be to actually feel objects and environments while playing. A built-in motor enables vibrations that can mimic all kinds of environmental feedback. Eye tracking allows you to display more accurate emotions and offers enhanced realism.
PSVR 2 Sense controllers are brand new. They feature a 6-axis motion sensor, haptic feedback, and a variety of buttons and triggers. Overall, the PSVR 2 seems to be one of the most sensor-heavy headsets out there.
The Quest 2 is no slouch in the sensor department either; with multiple cameras integrated into the headset, an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The camera can also detect and track hand movements without using a controller, although you might not find this necessary like the Quest 2 controllers and are ergonomically designed to be comfortable and easy to use when interacting with the virtual world.
While the Quest 2 doesn't have as many advanced tracking features as the PSVR 2, what it has works great and is cordless.
power and performance
The difference between these two headphones in terms of performance will be quite big. One headset is connected to the powerhouse of the PS5 and all the gaming power it can bring, while the other is a wireless device powered by a mobile processor.
That's not to say Quest 2 is sloppy. I've had a great experience playing some pretty advanced and awesome games and it's still a lot of fun. Just don't expect amazing textures and huge open worlds. So far, the mobile Snapdragon processor and 6GB of RAM can go. But also consider that you can connect your Quest 2 to a laptop to play those more advanced games and it will only cost you the price of a fast USB-C cable.

PSVR 2 has access to a lot more RAW power, and much like the original PSVR, this tends to result in more complex games and VR experiences. This, combined with the new high-quality screen and tracking technology, should make for one of the best, if not the best, VR experiences.
The PS5 requirement and itsconstantly boundbecause for many this is a great disadvantage and possibly an obstacle. In some cases, being able to roam freely is better than being held back by a thread for higher quality graphics. It remains to be seen how many cables the new PSVR 2 will require, but we expect fewer than the original.
library
PlayStation and Meta have curated an impressive selection of games and experiences for their hardware. Like PlayStation and Xbox, some VR games are exclusive and others are shared across systems. I tend to find the PSVR exclusives more impressive, while the meta offers a broader overall set of experiences, including film and video apps.
It looks like Sony is interested in investing in more content for PSVR 2 with the announcement that an exclusive Horizon title will be a launch title for the system. Comes from the extremely popularUniverse Horizon Zero Dawn, this exclusivity is a big boost for the new system.
That's not to say Meta isn't investing heavily in content as well, especially since Facebook has rebranded as Meta and Zuckerberg announced his ambitions for the Metaverse, in which Quest 2 will play a key role. New games, social apps, and immersive videos are released daily on the Quest Store, a significant portion of which are free or fairly cheap.
Meta also pushed the Quest 2 as a fitness device thanks to its small size and wireless design; There's even a section where you can track your workouts on apps that can make you sweat. You probably won't get much movement with the PSVR 2 unless you're happy tripping over a cord.
other considerations
Drums
The PSVR 2 connects directly to the PS5, so it doesn't have its own battery. The Quest 2 can last a couple of hours of playtime on a single charge, but you can keep playing while it's charging, just make sure you have a long cable.
Save on computer
Again, the PSVR 2 uses the storage of the PS5. So how many games you can have depends on what else you have installed on the system. The Quest 2 is available with 64GB or 128GB storage options. I tend not to download many games, so I'm in touch with 64GB; However, as games get bigger and more complex, you may find that storage space is running low.
Conclusion
In a way, that's not a fair comparison. When it comes to raw power and capability, the PSVR 2 would always outperform a standalone system. That doesn't mean it's a knockout. Quest 2 offers incredible technology and a great VR experience considering the much lower price.
Remember that to play PSVR 2 you need a PS5. That's a huge barrier to entry. You will also be connected to the PS5, which can limit your movements and your interaction with the VR world. For some, this may not be a problem given all the other benefits and new technologies this headset brings. For others, the freedom that Quest 2 brings cannot be achieved.
If you already have a PS5 and want to experience virtual reality at its most immersive, PSVR 2 offers just that. The Quest 2 is more of a mass-market option, and who knows what the next version might be like.
